Hello, I’m Babs!

Babs Club Studio founded in 2007 in Shetland.

At Babs Club Studio I focus on a professional customer experience, health and happiness.

About Babs

I had always intended in studying hair & makeup and did my work experience during school in a hairdressers, but becoming a mum at the age of 16 meant I had to focus on parenting!

After many different professions in the service sector I studied Textiles and had my own business ‘Woolly Godz’ for 10 years, during that time I became a mum again! I designed and produced unique knitwear and travelled the UK at various wholesale trade shows exhibiting and selling my work. I also travelled to New York for the first ever Tartan Week as an ambassador for Scottish knitwear businesses. I became disillusioned with the textile industry feeling that designers/makers were not valued and working for much less than their worth so I decided it was time for me to move on.

For 10 years I worked as a school support worker, during that time I studied part time in Glasgow as a beauty therapist and makeup artist. I then worked mobile offering wedding makeup and beauty treatments.

Not feeling accomplished enough I went on to further my makeup knowledge studying 2 years at West College Scotland in Glasgow, (HNC Fashion Makeup & HND Make-Up Artistry). This covered bridal and event, tv & film, stage & theatre, airbrushing, commercial & editorial, runway & period, face & body painting, special effect & prosthetic makeups.

After college I was accepted as a trainee with the BBC, I then went on to work in theatre and stage productions, events and independent films and again for the BBC & ITV in TV dramas and quiz shows.

Before relocating back to Shetland I was a makeup artistry lecturer with West College Scotland. Here as part of the WCS team I helped teach the NC & HNC makeup courses and the Employability Pathway students.

On return to Shetland I worked mobile from various salons in Shetland and then tired of always lugging bags around I got my own place within the Toll Clock Centre. In June 2021 myself and 3 others opened The Mission on Harbour Street, where my studio is now based. We offer a creative hub to other small businesses looking to rent affordable space in fab surroundings, its a very chill vibe!

In amongst client makeup & beauty treatments, film & photo shoots and weddings, I run weekly makeup/beauty/knitting classes at the Bridges Project which is part of the councils Youth & Employability Services.

I have over 25 years of experience, undertaking my first wedding makeups in 1996! I have extensive product knowledge and a huge amount of enthusiasm!

My micro business would not be here if it weren’t for all you lovely people who stop by for makeup and beauty treatments, I love hearing what you’ve all been up to. My studio is a calm safe private space where all are welcome. Hope to see you soon :)
